Learn about Approval Voting

What exactly is Approval Voting?

In approval voting elections, candidates aim to earn approval from as many voters as possible. This approach ensures that elected representatives reflect a diverse cross-section of voters during every election. Approval voting is simple to administer, inexpensive to implement, simple to tally and simple to audit.

Vote Splitting Explained

Vote Splitting occurs through the presence of a third-party or minor candidate in an election. Their candidacy influences the outcome by diverting votes away from one of the major candidates, typically one with similar ideological positions or from similar backgrounds.

Vote splitting can lead to an unexpected victory for a less-preferred candidate, as the presence of the third-party candidate splits the votes that would have otherwise gone to the major candidate, altering the outcome of the election.

Reform to Improve Candidate Quality

Candidates would need to adapt their campaign strategies to appeal to a broader base of voters, as voters are allowed to support multiple candidates with approval voting.

Instead of solely focusing on rallying their base or contrasting themselves against a single opponent, candidates would likely seek to appeal to a wider spectrum of voters by emphasizing their policies and values that resonate with a diverse range of constituents.
